When I first learned that Ghostrunner developer One More Level was working on a soulslike, I wasn't quite sure what to think. The cynic in me was disappointed, worried that perhaps the brilliance of One More Level would be diluted by trend-chasing, or that the developer was pivoting to a more mainstream genre to appeal to a wider audience, losing its best qualities in the process. Again, this was just a small, nagging voice in the back of my head, but now that I've played a few hours of Valor Mortis, I'm gobsmacked by how wrong this little voice was.

Summer Game Fest 2026 is just around the corner, and as one of the biggest showcases of the year, there is likely plenty to be excited about, even if much of it has yet to be revealed. The main Summer Game Fest showcase is set for June 5 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, where Geoff Keighley and Lucy James will host a look at what is next for video games. As a big fan of One More Level's Ghostrunner series, a duology that released in 2020 and 2023, I was very much excited to check out the team's latest effort, Valor Mortis. There's no release date just yet, but it's planned to launch sometime in 2026. It borrows some elements from Ghostrunner, but mostly stands on its own as a first-person soulslike where you play as a former soldier of Napoleon's army in the early 19th century.

Ghostrunner developer One More Level pulled back the curtain on its latest project, Valor Mortis, at Gamescom 2025. It knew how to make an impact because Valor Mortis immediately stood out, despite there potentially being some fatigue around the Soulslike genre. Its French aesthetic certainly helps, especially right now given the popularity of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, but it also brings to mind the 2024 Soulslike game Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn, particularly its take on Flintlock fantasy.
