Nodusfall's Elden Ring Similarities Raise One Big Question for Action RPGs

Gamescom 2026 has finally arrived, and with it, we have seen so many great new games and announcements across virtually every genre and setting imaginable. One of the most surprising trailers was shown right at the start of the event, with HoYoverse giving us a glimpse at their brand-new co-op ARPG, Nodusfall. Taking influence from all sides of the fantasy and mythological worlds, it is a strong new direction for the developer, but many players quickly pointed out that there were a lot of similarities to games like Elden Ring, from the visual style to the enemy designs, to the actual gameplay.

Though Nodusfall was one of several co-op games revealed during Gamescom Opening Night Live, the developer behind it is sure to have turned some heads. Formerly known as miHoYo, HoYoverse is a Chinese developer responsible for immensely popular games like Genshin Impact, Zenless Zone Zero, and the Honkai series. While I personally have never fallen in love with any of HoYoverse's previous works, Nodusfall certainly grabbed my attention, likely due to my undying affinity for all things FromSoftware and the major Elden Ring vibes that its reveal trailer gave off.

The developer of Genshin Impact, HoYoverse, is making a significant change to how gaining new characters will work in its upcoming game, Nodusfall. The new HoYoverse game was revealed during Gamescom Opening Night Live, and will be a departure from the Genshin Impact formula in more ways than one.
