A new round of Fallout remaster/remake rumors began earlier this week, but the source of those rumors—development studio Iron Galaxy—has more or less dismissed them. That's not likely the news Fallout fans were wanting to hear, but the good news is that these games are almost certainly being revisited somewhere.

For the uninitiated, Iron Galaxy is a studio that typically works with other publishers and developers for technical consulting, co-development, support, and ports. The studio has also worked on numerous remasters over the years, including Metroid Prime Remastered and The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered. Iron Galaxy recently posted an image of Fallout: New Vegas on social media, leading fans to believe the studio was working on a remaster. This led to an interesting fan theory: Bethesda wants both Fallout 3 and New Vegas to get the remaster treatment soon, letting the Oblivion Remastered developer Virtuos work on Fallout 3 while Iron Galaxy worked on New Vegas (Bethesda would likely co-develop in both cases).

Iron Galaxy Pours Water on the Fallout: New Vegas Remaster Fires

Unfortunately, that theory is dead in the water. Iron Galaxy recently posted about a company meeting with the iconic Fallout "please stand by" image. As this post fueled Fallout: New Vegas remaster rumors, Iron Galaxy responded to a post on Twitter dismissing the possibility...maybe. The company said, "Nope! There is nothing to see here." It explained that the slide is used every month and "has nothing to do with anything Fallout being worked on."

It ended the message by saying: "As you can imagine, we love Fallout, too. Now pardon us as we retreat back to our vault." In response, fans seem to think Iron Galaxy is still teasing fans, even as it may be pure hopium. First off, there's no straight-up denial that it is working on a Fallout game, as the one sentence suggests the "slide...has nothing to do with anything Fallout being worked on," which is true in any situation. Retreating back to a vault is also a peculiar choice of words, leading some fans to hope against hope that Iron Galaxy is just issuing a statement to placate the masses.

A Fallout: New Vegas Remaster is Still Likely

Whether or not Iron Galaxy is working on Fallout: New Vegas Remastered is secondary to the hope that such a game is in development somewhere. Between casual insiders mentioning it and suspicious activity with the Fallout games on Steam, hope is at an all-time high. Of course, the best thing fans can do is take everything with a grain of salt, but there is some confidence that Bethesda is exploring the IP outside the show and Fallout 5 (reportedly in early pre-production).

Jez Corden of Windows Central has reported that fans "are eventually getting a Fallout 3 remake in the vein of Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, as well as Fallout New Vegas on top." On top of that, VGC's Jordan Middler has reported that there are multiple Fallout projects in the works, adding that nothing is far enough along to be played any time soon.

It remains to be seen when/if these rumors manifest in a real game, and they may not even get much marketing. Oblivion Remastered's sales speak for themselves, and its shadow drop worked well. If the new Fallout games were released alongside season 3 of the show, then that's likely a win on both sides, and so that's the earliest I'd suspect either Fallout 3 or Fallout: New Vegas to have a remaster drop. It could be sooner, it could be later, and it's unknown who is developing it outside of Bethesda's walls. If anything is clear, however, fans are hungry for it.
