Hardened Mass is primarily obtained by defeating organic creatures inside Blast Zones (also called Nuke Zones) in Fallout 76. You can find Blast Zones by opening your map and looking for big, red circles on it. If you didn't know, Blast/Nuke Zones in Fallout 76 are created by players who decide to launch nuclear missiles in Appalachia; this means that they can appear at any time, and you can even make them appear yourself, provided you've completed all the prerequisites. Just be aware that this is an endgame process, and you likely won't be able to launch nukes yourself if you haven't made progress in one of the main questlines.

How to Get Hardened Mass in Fallout 76
You can find Hardened Mass in the corpses of organic enemies you defeat inside Blast/Nuke Zones. If you want to get tons of them, go to any irradiated blast zone, then start shooting everything that moves. Remember: only organic enemies drop Hardened Mass in Fallout 76, so enemies like robots don't count.
How to Find Nuke Zones in Fallout 76
The hardest part about farming Hardened Mass is finding a Nuclear Blast Zone. These only appear on the map once someone on the server decides to launch a nuke somewhere, and if you want to launch your own nukes in Fallout 76, you need to first finish the I Am Become Death quest, then do the repeatable Hide and Seek and Destroy quests, which involve the actual process of launching nukes.
Either way, you'll know that a Nuke Zone is active in your server if there's a big red circle somewhere. These indicate the actual area of the Nuke Zone. You'll also get a server-wide warning that a nuke is about to hit Appalachia.
Once you enter a Nuke Zone, you'll immediately get hit by severe radiation, so if you don't want to say goodbye to all of your max health, you'll want to bring a Hazmat Suit or a properly-equipped set of Power Armor. If you're a Ghoul, then you won't have to worry about radiation damage while in a Nuke Zone.
What to Do With Hardened Mass
Hardened Mass is a key crafting ingredient for making Stable Flux, which itself is an ingredient used for crafting items like jetpacks, Ultracite Ammo, and various Fallout 76 Mutations. Flux needs to be stabilized before it can be used, and to do so, you'll need the following materials:
- 1 Hardened Mass
- 1 Glowing Mass
- 1 High-Radiation Fluids
- 10 Flux of any kind
Hardened Mass can be harvested from any organic creature that dies inside a Blast Zone, and you can find Glowing Mass and High-Radiation Fluids inside Blast Zones as well.
The same idea does apply to Flux, but the different types of Flux (cobalt, crimson, fluorescent, etc) can only be obtained by harvesting flora affected by the nuclear fallout of a Blast Zone. For example, if you want to get Stable Cobalt Flux, then you need to go to a Blast Zone that has a lot of Bloodleaf or Wild Corn.
