Dungeons and Dragons has officially revealed the seven subclasses coming in Ravenloft: The Horrors Within, the sourcebook scheduled to release on June 16. The horror-themed subclasses from an Unearthed Arcana Dungeons and Dragons released in 2025 are finally making their official debut, albeit with one notable exception: the Hexblade Warlock.

In May 2025, Dungeons and Dragons put out a horror-themed Unearthed Arcana featuring eight subclasses, implying it was working on a new sourcebook full of things that go bump in the night. Sure enough, when Dungeons and Dragons revealed its roadmap for 2026, the first book on the docket was Ravenloft: The Horrors Within, a sequel of sorts to Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft, updated for the 2024 D&D rules.

Wizards of the Coast follows the lead of Dungeons and Dragons fans who refer to the 2024 rules refresh as 5.5e, albeit with some fine print.

All Subclasses Coming in D&D’s Ravenloft: The Horrors Within

Now, Dungeons and Dragons has officially confirmed the subclasses coming in this new update. There will be seven in total, including D&D 5.5e versions of iconic classics like the Grave Domain Cleric, Shadow Sorcerer, Undead Patron Warlock, College of Spirits Bard, and Phantom Rogue. However, two brand-new subclasses will be introduced as well: the Reanimator Artificer and the Hollow Warden Ranger.

  • Grave Domain Cleric: Walk the border of life and death, bringing allies back from the brink while ushering foes over the threshold.
  • Shadow Sorcerer: Channel the darkness within, summon Spirits of Ill Omen, and move through shadows.
  • Undead Patron Warlock: Take the Form of Dread to gain some of the patron’s dark powers, and become akin to an undead creature.
  • College of Spirits Bard: Spend Bardic Inspiration to channel Spirits from Beyond to buff allies and harm foes.
  • Phantom Rogue: Become like a ghost, ravage foes with Wails from the Grave, and steal Tokens from the Departed.
  • Reanimator Artificer: Create and control a Reanimated Companion in battle akin to Frankenstein's monster.
  • Hollow Warden Ranger: Wield the eerie power and hunger of the ancient wilds with a subclass straight out of The Witcher.

Of note, only seven of the eight subclasses from the Horror Subclasses UA made it into this book. The Hexblade, one of the most popular Warlock Patrons in D&D, didn’t make the cut and will not appear in Ravenloft: The Horrors Within.

That said, the Hexblade will almost certainly arrive in a future Dungeons and Dragons product. The second sourcebook D&D is putting out this year is called Arcana Unleashed, and promises to add even more player options to the game, including a number of high-magic subclasses. The Hexblade Warlock appeared with revisions in a magic-themed D&D Unearthed Arcana from June 2025. It is possible the Hexblade could arrive in Arcana Unleashed alongside these other subclasses. If not, it could find its home in the unnamed third book near the end of 2026, which may or may not include the apocalyptic or villainous subclasses that have been playtested in other UAs.

Regardless, Ravenloft: The Horrors Within officially releases on June 16, but some fans will be able to check it out early. Players who have Hero Tier subscriptions to D&D Beyond can access the book digitally starting June 9, while Master Tier subscribers can get it June 2, meaning gamers can start seeing how these subclasses changed from their debut in D&D's Horror Subclasses UA before the physical product ships.
