Dungeons and Dragons fans are absolutely loving the new villainous subclasses and feat chains from the most recent Unearthed Arcana, with some saying it's been the best reception to a UA in history. These options are currently in their playtesting phase, but they will likely be printed in a future Dungeons and Dragons supplement.
On April 2, Dungeons and Dragons released a new Unearthed Arcana titled “Villainous Options.” This playtest document included four subclasses with an antagonistic theme – the Pestilence Domain Cleric, Circle of the Titan Druid, Hell Knight Fighter, and Demonic Sorcerer – as well as Paths of Villainy feat chains for Death Knights and Liches.
Dungeons and Dragons '5.5e' is Official, Sort Of
Wizards of the Coast follows the lead of Dungeons and Dragons fans who refer to the 2024 rules refresh as 5.5e, albeit with some fine print.
Fans Weigh In on D&D Villainous Options
Now, some players are claiming they are among the best Dungeons and Dragons subclasses they have ever seen. D&D fan Deathpacito-01 took to Reddit to applaud the UA, saying it has received “the most positive reception I’ve seen in like, ever.” They hope Wizards of the Coast gives whoever made these subclasses “a big bonus and a lot of job security,” as they "[have] got a secret sauce figured out. Let them cook.” They were not alone in this assessment, with over 500 upvotes and 68 comments on their thread within a few days of posting.
The subclasses and feats themselves are thematically exceptional and would be perfect for antagonists, anti-heroes, and evil campaigns. The Pestilence Cleric lets players wield blight and dissolve into a swarm of rats, while the Circle of the Titan Druid can transform into terrifying kaiju and swallow enemies whole. The Hell Knight Fighter ignites their gear with hellfire and inflicts Infernal Wounds on foes, while the Demonic Sorcerer becomes a conduit for the warping powers of the Abyss. Meanwhile, the Paths of Villainy let characters invest feats into the two chains to gain abilities and resistances used by iconic Dungeons and Dragons foes like Vecna and Lord Soth.
-
Subclasses
- Cleric: Pestilence Domain
- Druid: Circle of the Titan
- Fighter: Hell Knight
- Sorcerer: Demonic Sorcery
-
Paths of Villainy
- Martials: Death Knight
- Spellcasters: Lich
That said, despite their impeccable vibes, these subclasses are not exactly balanced. The Pestilence Domain's abilities rival those of Dungeons and Dragons' Grave Domain Cleric in strength, while the Hell Knight is unreliable due to several core features having only a one-in-six chance to activate on a limited-use ability until 18th level. Meanwhile, the Titan Druid can become Gargantuan four levels earlier than the Rune Knight Fighter reaches Huge size, yet its defensive capabilities are lacking in comparison to the Moon Druid. The Death Knight feats, except the capstone, only give characters a few spells that use limited resources, while the Lich path is borderline overpowered, granting the ability to restore spell slots and gain temporary hit points while inflicting debilitating conditions.
Luckily, there is still plenty of time to balance these subclasses before they are officially released. It is unclear where on the Dungeons and Dragons 2026 roadmap they will arrive, but fans surmise they will appear in the untitled third sourcebook arriving during Season of Champions at the end of the year. For now, the survey for the Villainous Options Unearthed Arcana is open until April 23, so gamers should be sure to give feedback and help shape these options ahead of their inevitable release.
