This article contains spoilers for Euphoria Season 3
Since premiering on HBO in 2019, Euphoria has been one of TV's most controversial and talked-about dramas. Created by Sam Levinson, the show follows Zendaya's Rue Bennett, a teenager who struggles with addiction while grappling with identity, relationships, and her own trauma alongside a group of her classmates. Euphoria became a phenomenon thanks to its striking visual style and impressive performances, which also helped launch several of its stars toward A-list territory, including Jacob Elordi and Hunter Schafer.
However, Euphoria has been particularly divisive with Season 3, which is now confirmed to be the show's last. With graphic content and increasingly chaotic storylines, Euphoria Season 3, Episode 8, "In God We Trust," delivered a controversial ending. One particular character's storyline received the most criticism, as Rue Bennett met an unfortunate end.

Rue has been the voice to some pretty memorable lines in Euphoria. These are arguably the best of the bunch.
What Happens to Rue in Euphoria's Finale?
Zendaya's Rue Meets a Tragic Fate
For much of "In God We Trust," it seems as if Rue will survive the dangerous world she has spent Season 3 navigating. After becoming entangled in a criminal conflict involving drug traffickers Alamo and Laurie, Rue manages to escape a deadly operation and helps trigger a major DEA crackdown, while Laurie kills herself. The episode initially frames her as a survivor again, as she seemingly makes it through another situation that should've destroyed her. She eventually finds safety with Ali, her longtime sponsor, which leads fans to believe that redemption may be possible.
However, in one of the most polarizing moments of Euphoria, Rue dies by overdose after unintentionally taking fentanyl-laced Percocet pills that Alamo left behind. Ali later discovers Rue dead and realizes the pills were contaminated with fentanyl. The episode then skips forward another three months when Ali is left picking up the pieces. He confronts Alamo and soon kills him. Rue's death sequence is presented as a tragic culmination of Euphoria's central themes surrounding addiction and recovery, even though it doesn't quite hit home. Many viewers felt it invalidated her journey, while Levinson described it as the "honest ending." Rue's death also serves as the emotional endpoint of Euphoria, given the recent news that the show wouldn't go on past its third season.

Euphoria is Now Over With Season 3's Finale
The Episode is a Definitive Goodbye to the Characters
Euphoria Season 3 ends several major storylines, especially with the deaths of Alamo and Laurie. Nate Jacobs also met a tragic, albeit strange, end when he died in Episode 7 after being bitten by a rattlesnake while buried alive. All of the other characters, meanwhile, are left attempting to move forward after years of trauma and violence. Cassie and Maddy ultimately attempt to use Nate's home as a content house, Lexi moves forward on her own, and Jules mourns Rue's death while painting a tribute to the woman she loved. Ali attends his final sobriety meeting and then meets with the family that took Rue in, leaves a seat open for her, and sees her smiling at the end of the table in a vision. Plenty of plot threads were left unresolved, though, including the cover-up of Nate's death and Maddy's debt.
What Episode 8 does do well is function partly as a tribute to the late Angus Cloud, who tragically died in 2023, with references to Fezco throughout the installment and a previously-unseen flashback of Rue and Fez together. However, much of the episode was received negatively. The Euphoria finale pushes aside the intricate character relationships that made the show so popular in favor of messy crime-thriller storylines and ridiculous shock value. Rue's death is also widely polarizing, as many fans believe she deserved a more hopeful ending.
Many fans have compared the finale to other disappointing TV show endings, like Game of Thrones. Either way, Euphoria closes by causing as much conversation among its viewers as its first and second seasons did.
