The dating world has become increasingly complex over the past few decades, even more so because of the explosive popularity of apps like Tinder and global hits like Love Island. It's no secret that these dating shows aren't trying to be the most highbrow form of entertainment, but they are still pretty damn entertaining, if purely from a spectator's point of view.

The number of games now offering romance elements has been growing over the years, as slice-of-life gameplay can blend these elements smoothly.

Whether you are looking for a specific kind of romantic partner to fall in love with or are happy with virtually anything, there is bound to be a strange and funny dating game just around the corner.

Just to be crystal clear, "trashy" is a term of endearment.

Dream Daddy

Suburban Romance Just Got Better

Details:

  • Multiple romance routes centered around single dads
  • Choices shape relationships over time

Dream Daddy takes place in a seemingly ordinary suburban neighborhood where you, as a newly single father, move into a community full of eligible dads next door. From there, it is entirely up to you who you text, play games with, and romance, with each dad having their own unique quirks and endings to follow.

Mechanically, it is a pretty simple dating game, and I found that the lack of complexity actually means the whole experience shines much brighter, as suddenly, all those corny dad jokes and silly moments can land a lot harder without needless clutter in their way. While the premise sounds like a joke, the game succeeds because it treats its relationships sincerely, balancing humor with genuinely well-written romance arcs and memorable characters that will have you coming back date after date.

Love Is All Around

Fiction Becomes Reality

Details:

  • Full live-action experience with countless paths and endings
  • Romantic paths unfold in dynamic ways

Love Is All Around embraces the messy energy of modern dating shows through a live-action format filled to the brim with flirtation, misunderstandings, and dramatic choices that unfold in real time. You are presented with six potential lovers from all sides of the personality spectrum, and it is your job to build a meaningful connection whilst juggling the weight of crippling financial debt.

The 6 Most Perfect Romances In Video Games, Ranked

Relationships are never perfect, but these video game romances certainly are.

The game's FMV structure makes every interaction feel like a scene from a reality television series that you are actively participating in, and because I played through it alongside others, all the silliness became amplified tenfold. Also, you aren't limited to the options presented on-screen, meaning there are always chances to find small details and extras in the background for those searching for their fairy-tale ending.

Purrfect Date

A Furry, Feline Mystery

Details:

  • A mix of investigation and dating
  • Comedy infused into every interaction

Dating games often come with pretty crazy concepts, but Purrfect Date is certainly among the strangest. You arrive on a tropical island, something that sounds all too familiar, to study cats and eventually find yourself dating them, learning more about their personalities and the mystery behind your research.

Beneath the absurdity lies a surprisingly elaborate mystery narrative that had me laughing all the way through, helped by the complete disregard for reality that the game constantly pushes. And, with 18 endings to unlock, there are plenty of reasons to play through the dates all over again, even discounting the hilarious interactions and moments that happen along the way.

Class Of 09

The Other Side Of The Coin

Details:

  • Labeled as a rejection sim
  • Self-aware of its own absurdity

Class of '09 approaches romance from an entirely different angle, almost acting as an anti-dating sim that flips every stereotype on its head. Rather than focusing on idealized relationships, it presents a cynical, chaotic high school environment filled with dysfunctional personalities and terrible decisions that lead to very different outcomes from a typical date.

Dating mechanics exist largely as vehicles for the game's dark humor and social satire, and as silly as some of the scenes can get, I always found that the self-aware tone never strayed too far from sight. Many routes end in complete disaster, and that unpredictability is part of the appeal, turning an otherwise standard experience into a highly chaotic one.

Date Everything!

No Judgment Here

Details:

  • 100 fully voiced romance options
  • Huge variety of endings and playthroughs

The title really does say it all. Date Everything! takes the dating sim formula to its logical extreme by letting you romance virtually every object inside your home, from furniture to appliances to everyday items that all come to life with their own distinct personalities.

The sheer number of possibilities may seem overwhelming at first, but I never found the game to be too overbearing, as you are always interacting with characters in a meaningful way, rather than being bombarded by constant partners. What could have been a one-note joke becomes an enormous relationship simulator with an astonishing number of branching paths that are equal parts funny and entertaining.

Hatoful Boyfriend

Just A Couple Of Lovebirds

Details:

  • High-school dating but with birds
  • Surprisingly emotional stories beneath the surface

Hatoful Boyfriend remains one of the most famous unconventional dating sims ever made and one that is both very silly and emotional at the same time. The setting is fairly basic, being a prestigious school that is fairly familiar to other dating sims, yet the students are actually birds, bringing plenty of feathery jokes to an already funny experience.

What keeps the game memorable is how committed it is to its world. Beneath the absurd bird-based romance lies a surprisingly ambitious narrative containing mysteries, tragedies, and complex character arcs that had me surprised and eager to see just how far things would go in the end.

I Wani Hug That Gator!

Charming, Silly, And Scaly

Details:

  • Fleshed out characters across the entire school
  • Heartfelt story about friendship and love

I Wani Hug That Gator! follows the classic trope of a transfer student navigating an awkward school life, only in this case, your classmates are anthropomorphic dinosaur animals that all have their own social issues. Olivia sits at the center and acts as both the game's central romantic interest and a true friend that you will no doubt grow attached to long before the credits roll.

The relationship systems are fairly conventional, focusing on dialogue choices and interactions that opt for a more emotional tone than a dramatic one. It's over the top, quirky, and I would certainly call it a must-play for those who prefer a more down-to-earth approach, albeit one from millions of years ago.

Sucker For Love

Out-Of-This-World Romance

Details:

  • Lovecraft meets classic dating sim
  • Horror becomes romantic comedy

Sucker for Love: First Date transforms forbidden rituals and world-ending horrors into dating opportunities for you to pursue. Like typical courting, you find yourself performing gestures and activities, but instead of gifting flowers or going on a romantic date, you end up performing occult ceremonies in hopes of impressing eldritch beings that would normally be responsible for humanity's destruction.

The dating systems mirror traditional visual novels, but every romantic interaction is infused with a healthy dose of cosmic horror. And, the increasingly ridiculous supernatural situations open the doors for plenty of bizarre encounters to unfold, and even when I thought things couldn't get any more bizarre, the game pulls the rug and sends you spiraling all over again.
