According to the people who raised her, entering this place is akin to death, as only the bravest and most prepared adventurers can survive its ruthless monsters and hazards. After finding a robot by the name of Reg, who was created inside the Abyss, the duo embarks on a quest to find the origins of the android, as well as Riko’s mother.

While this series might look cute and innocent at first, fans must not be deceived, as Made in Abyss is one of the few series that will destroy them emotionally. As the protagonists travel down the titular pit, they encounter monsters, enemies, and even natural dangers that will make them suffer in ways no human should even imagine. It is a gut-wrenching manga that plays with its horror elements perfectly, making each of the horrible fates of its characters feel both depressing and memorable.

Several years after these monsters established themselves in the land, what is left of humanity works to find a way to stop and kill them. It is not until a girl named Waka, who hated the Gods because one of them caused the death of her best friend, is discovered to have god-like powers, that the citizens of Japan regain hope, as they plan to use the woman as a weapon.

After God’s world already sounds like one no one would want to live in, and that is before learning about the ruthless ways in which the Gods mock and torture humanity. Lamentably, Waka’s experience with her peers is not much better, as she soon discovers what desperation can push a person to do. It is a bleak story, with an excellent use of body-horror and complex philosophical questions that will stay with readers.

2 Ubel Blatt

Long ago, the mighty Empire was threatened by a dark force known as the Wischtech. The emperor, desperate to save his people, sent 14 heroes to fight the enemy, of which three fell in battle, seven returned as the saviors of humanity, and four were killed and dishonored due to their betrayal. This last group was labeled as the Lances of Betrayal. Although the world has enjoyed peace for several years, the sudden return of the great traitors threatens everything.

Furthermore, a young swordsman, easily one of the best in anime and manga history, is set on killing the Seven Heroes, claiming he is looking for revenge. Ubel Blatt may seem like a typical fantasy story with a protagonist looking for revenge, but audiences are not ready for the brutality that lies in its pages. It is a series with one of the most unique worldbuildings, creating a land in which the worst of humanity seems to thrive, with each chapter being more violent and gory.

Due to the Shogun’s desire to become immortal, a group of death row inmates is sent to a remote island in search of the legendary Elixir of Immortality. Each of these criminals, like the protagonist Gabimaru, is tasked with exploring the land under the watchful eye of a soldier, who is tasked to kill them if they break their oath. While the island might seem like a beautiful and tranquil place at first, the adventurers will soon find out the horrors that await them.

Hell’s Paradise is a series that perfectly blends epic fights and one of the best and most complex power systems in anime with body horror of the highest caliber. The monsters that inhabit the island are the stuff of nightmares, and how they hunt and kill humans will cause discomfort to almost all readers. Gabimaru’s quest is not for the faint of heart, as the art and atmosphere of the series can send shivers down almost any reader’s spine.
