Critical Role might have just teased an Exandria Unlimited: Calamity movie at Emerald City Comic Con. This and several other factors seem to point towards an animated movie project centered around one of Critical Role's most popular Dungeons and Dragons campaigns in history.
When one thinks of Dungeons and Dragons actual play, Critical Role is often the first one that comes to mind. Between memorable characters, famous stars, and authentic storylines, Critical Role has played a major part in the popularization of Dungeons and Dragons over the last decade. In light of its success, Critical Role has released two animated series: The Legend of Vox Machina, following its first campaign, and The Mighty Nein, following its second.
AdHoc's Critical Role Game Could Literally Be Dispatch with a Different Coat of Paint, and I'd Be Perfectly Fine With That
AdHoc Studio's next project is a Critical Role game, and even though the developer could change up the gameplay, it really doesn't have to.
Critical Role Teases Exandria Unlimited: Calamity Movie
However, another Critical Role animation project is likely on the way in the form of a feature-length movie. A teaser during Critical Role’s Emerald City Comic Con 2026 panel heavily implied Exandria Unlimited: Calamity could be the subject of this unannounced project. ComicBook’s The Character Sheet series on YouTube compiled clips and evidence from this panel and more in a short video.

‘Would You Guys Like to See an Animated Calamity Movie?’ Sam Riegel at Emerald City Comic Con
Near the end of the panel at Emerald City Comic Con, Critical Role CEO and actor Travis Willingham evasively said, “There are whole teams working on things,” which revealed very little on its own. But then, co-star Sam Riegel said, “Would you guys like to see an animated Calamity movie?” Meanwhile, backstage at Comic Con, Riegel told Popverse, “We’re about to pitch — I don’t even know if you guys know this — we’re about to pitch a movie. We’ve got things cooking.” Together, these comments suggest Critical Role is hoping to make a movie out of Exandria Unlimited: Calamity.
Exandria Unlimited: Calamity was a four-part miniseries that took place in the ancient history of Critical Role’s world, starring:
- Aabria Iyengar as Laerryn Coramar-Seelie
- Luis Carazo as Zerxus Ilerez
- Marisha Ray as Patia Por'co
- Sam Riegel as Loquatius Seelie
- Travis Willingham as Cerrit Agrupnin
- Lou Wilson as Nydas Okiro
- Brennan Lee Mulligan as the Dungeon Master
The campaign depicted the fall of the floating city of Avalir, as well as the events that led to the god war in Critical Role known as the Calamity. This miniseries became one of the most popular Critical Role stories in history, with over six million views on its first episode. Only the first two episodes of Campaign 3 and the animated intro for Campaign 2 presently have more views on the official Critical Role YouTube.
If this teaser were not convincing enough on its own, another piece of evidence from a recent Variety interview between Matt Mercer and Brennan Lee Mulligan seems to corroborate it. While talking about The Legend of Vox Machina and The Mighty Nein, Mercer said, “You’re doing this now, too, bro!” Mulligan is not involved in either existing Critical Role show, implying he might be a part of another unannounced project.
Mulligan has also taken over as the DM of Critical Role Campaign 4, where Mercer is a player.
At the time, many had wondered if Mercer had spoiled an upcoming animated show for Dimension 20, which Mulligan DMs for on behalf of Dropout. However, with this new context, it seems more likely he was referring to this potential Calamity movie, which Mulligan almost certainly has to play a part in, since he was the miniseries’ Dungeon Master. Mercer has also only appeared in a couple of Dimension 20 series, making it less likely he would be privy to that insider knowledge. Either way, it was a deliberate decision to keep this interaction, as Variety could have easily edited it out.
Calamity Characters in The Legend of Vox Machina and The Mighty Nein
Two characters from EXU: Calamity have shown up in Critical Role's existing animated series already. Zerxus appeared in Season 3 of The Legend of Vox Machina as the owner of one of the Vestiges of Divergence. Meanwhile, a recorded illusion of Nydas greeted the characters in The Mighty Nein when they plundered the pirate lord's old lair on behalf of the Gentleman.
It is important to note that nothing has been confirmed yet, so fans should temper their expectations until an official announcement is made. Either way, it is clear Critical Role is working on some exciting projects in the near future – and Calamity is on their radar, at the very least. In the meantime, The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4 premieres on June 3, 2026. The fifth and final season, along with the second season of The Mighty Nein, are both in development.
