Given the massive install bases of the Xbox One and (especially) the PlayStation 4, not to mention COVID derailing the start of the current console generation, it’s no surprise that they’ve remained relevant for nearly 13 years. Major games have continued to release and recieve support on PS4 and Xbox One despite their age, but one of the biggest supporters of the cross-gen trend, Call of Duty, is changing course. With the launch of Modern Warfare 4 on October 23, 2026, players can say goodbye to last-gen versions of premium CoD titles. And, unfortunately for Warzone fans, this means they can say goodbye to their favorite battle royale title as well.
It’s been confirmed via Activision Support that once Modern Warfare 4 is integrated with Call of Duty: Warzone, the game will no longer be supported on last-gen hardware. This is devastating for those who either cannot afford a newer console or saw no reason to make the jump, as their hand is essentially being forced. Casual players who only spend their time in free-to-play games like Call of Duty: Warzone will have to get a newer console to continue playing, or they’ll have to find a new game to replace it. Naturally, Warzone fans should be prepared for the end, and thankfully, June 4 is only going to be a prelude to the actual shutdown later in 2026.
Despite PS4 and Xbox One being left behind with MW4, the new Call of Duty will be releasing on Nintendo Switch 2.
Call of Duty: Warzone Will Soon Be Unplayable for Millions of Gamers
Millions of gamers will soon be unable to play Call of Duty: Warzone, one of the most popular battle royales in the world.
Call of Duty: Warzone’s Big June 4 Date Doesn’t Paint the Full Picture
Call of Duty: Warzone’s full last-gen shutdown outline is as follows:
- June 4, 2026: No new downloads of Call of Duty: Warzone will be allowed on PS4 and Xbox One.
- June 25, 2026: The in-game store for Call of Duty: Warzone will be removed.
- November 2026: Call of Duty: Warzone will no longer be playable on PS4 and Xbox One, coinciding with the launch of Season 1.
So while dedicated Warzone fans on older consoles still have over five months to play the game, it’s important that any new players download Warzone ASAP since it will no longer be on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 storefronts come June 4. If you have a friend or two that you’ve been trying to get into the game, it’s essential to have them add Warzone to their libraries before this cutoff date. If Call of Duty: Warzone has been downloaded onto a PS4 or Xbox One in the past, then it can be re-downloaded up until the actual end date in November with no issue. June 4 will also see COD Point currency packs, Call of Duty League Operator packs, and so on removed from the consoles’ storefronts.

If June 4 is the end of new, last-gen players joining the Call of Duty: Warzone community, then June 25 marks the end of in-game shopping. Players can only purchase cosmetics with the COD Points they’ve bought (prior to June 4) until June 25. On this date, the in-game store will be removed, preventing bundle purchases altogether. It is worth noting that all of a player’s purchased skins will be accessible if they upgrade to a newer console within the same family; if they bought an arsenal of skins for PS4 Warzone, they’ll get to use them on PS5 Warzone even after the PS4 version is shut down.
BO7 battle passes will still be available within last-gen Call of Duty: Warzone up until the shutdown date later in 2026, allowing players to make progress and unlock the free tiers. Premium passes will not be available, however.
Last-Gen Players Will Have a Choice to Make Come Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Season 1
While an exact date has not been provided for MW4 Season 1, inaugural Seasons of each premium CoD game tend to release 3-4 weeks after the game itself. With Modern Warfare 4 releasing on October 23, this makes it safe to assume that Season 1 will begin at some point in November. So, with June 4 being the beginning of the end and a clear end date in sight for Warzone on PS4 and Xbox One, it will soon be time for players to make a decision. Do they want to upgrade to a current-gen console and see the better textures, visuals, and performance of MW4-integrated Warzone? Or do they want to have a few more nostalgia-filled trips down memory lane — AKA Verdansk — before moving on from the game? While fans will have a few months to enjoy the last-gen version of Warzone and make up their minds, the clock is ticking, and you’ll want to make sure the game is in your libraries before June 4 arrives.
