After being announced in early 2025, Chloé Zhao's Buffy: The Vampire Slayer Reboot will no longer be moving forward at Hulu. Under the name Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, the new sequel series would have been set after Season 7 of the original show and ignored the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight comics to tell a new story set within the TV show's canon.
New Sunnydale would have brought back Sarah Michelle Gellar in her titular role, alongside a new cast of main characters. Ryan Kiera Armstrong had been cast alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar as the next Slayer, but in a recent Instagram post, Sarah Michell Gellar has unfortunately confirmed that the reboot is dead. This is sad news for Buffy fans, but may be a blessing in disguise considering the original series' legacy and the hit-or-miss nature of modern reboot series.

Sarah Michelle Gellar Reveals Chloé Zhao's Buffy: The Vampire Slayer Reboot is Dead
In an Instagram video she dropped on her account on March 14, 2026, Sarah Michelle Gellar broke the news that Hulu has canceled Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale and will not be moving forward with Chloé Zhao's un-aired pilot. The pilot wrapped filming in late 2025, focusing on a brand new cast with only Sarah Michelle Gellar reprising her role from the original series (though the plan was seemingly to bring in previous cast members as the reboot went along). Notably, Joss Whedon had no involvement with the reboot series.
On Instagram, Sarah Michelle Gellar expressed her sadness over Hulu's decision,
"I want to thank Chloé Zhao because I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy’s stylish yet affordable boots. And thanks to Chloé, I was reminded how much I love her and how much she means – not only to me, but to all of you."
Sarah Michelle Gellar assured fans that she can still be reached if the apocalypse comes, but in the meantime, Sunnydale and Buffy fans will go without a new Slayer.
