As everything gets more expensive, low-end PC gaming grows ever more attractive and, frankly, necessary. You don't need to have an RTX 4090 with water cooling and the latest processor to not only enjoy yourself, but also to be spoiled with choices. Steam caters to pretty much every type of gamer, and that includes thousands of games that can be run on old laptops or PCs with a graphics card more than a decade old. Sure, they might not be able to run Crimson Desert or Forza Horizon 6, but they still might be able to run one of 2026's highest-rated games so far.

As great as Valve's platform is, Steam also has a serious slop issue that can make it difficult to pinpoint the accessible games worth playing. Well, let's try to simplify that process as much as possible with a list of recommendations across a spectrum of low-end tiers.

One of the bigger releases of 2026, Mina the Hollower comes from the team behind Shovel Knight, a connection that set expectations absurdly high. For the most part, Yacht Club Games more than managed to live up to its own legacy, crafting a new indie gem that very much sets itself apart from the previous franchise. Very much a throwback to the days when 8-bit games were considered revolutionary, Mina the Hollower combines classic Zelda with modern controls and intense combat that requires patience and mastery. If you have a particular fondness for Game Boy Color-era RPGs, this game should hit you right in the nostalgia.

Obviously, games with these types of visuals cater to low-end systems by design, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that Mina the Hollower runs on even Intel HD 5000 graphics. Steam is absolutely flooded with these types of releases, to the point that they no longer feel all that special. However, Mina the Hollower is special, and it is one of the most well-rounded games released in recent months.

  • The Secret 2026 Performance Fix: Due to being new, the game has bugs and issues that are still being ironed out. Keep an eye on Steam's Discussions page, as that is where fixes will be first posted.

Well, yeah, a Vampire Survivors spin-off runs on just about everything, as it would be against the brand if it didn't. More importantly, Vampire Crawlers: The Turbo Wildcard from Vampire Survivors is just as brilliant as its mother game, entering and establishing itself in a pretty oversaturated market. Steam is packed to the brim with roguelite deckbuilders, most of which are not demanding and pretty darn addictive. Even with the Vampire Survivors connection, Vampire Crawlers needed to make an instant impression to drag people away from Balatro or Slay the Spire 2.

The most impressive thing is just how well the spin-off translates the appeal of the original game into this format. Deck-builders tend to be on the slower side, but Vampire Crawlers is surprisingly kinetic, filling each battle with explosive special effects that make every success incredibly satisfying. Sensory overload is the name of the game, and it is food for the brain.

OK, this one is a bit of a cheat, as Bongo Cat isn't exactly a "game." However, it is sold as one on Steam, and you can technically play it for longer than pretty much any other release. Basically, Bongo Cat is a desktop/laptop companion that counts every time you type a letter, granting rewards when milestones are reached. A very simple concept executed perfectly, this game can serve as extra encouragement when you find yourself struggling to find motivation to work on a project. Just let Bongo Cat cheer you along. Also, the game's free.

Esoteric Ebb

Disco Elysium + Dungeons & Dragons

  • Potato Tier: Tier 3
  • The Secret 2026 Performance Fix: Nothing right now due to its recency. This is a narrative-driven game, so while performance on an Iris Xe might not be optimal, it should still be playable.

While Steam's minimum specs advise a GTX 1050, Esoteric Ebb should work well enough for integrated graphics, as long as we are talking about relatively high-end stuff like the Iris Xe. A spiritual successor to Disco Elysium, this 2026 release adds a touch of Dungeons and Dragons via mechanics like saving throws, stats, and spell slots, and your decisions can very much ruin the "campaign." While you could end up becoming a superstar clerk who is put on a pedestal, you could also make one baffling choice after another, dooming the city and yourself.

Esoteric Ebb is a detective mystery similar to Disco Elysium, although its fantasy setting gives it a widely different feel and tone. It isn't as politically driven as that masterpiece, but it delivers great writing, unpredictable developments, and open-ended quests. The story also comes with a ticking clock angle, as the mystery needs to be tackled and solved within the 5 days left before an election. Start over.

Hollow Knight: Silksong

The Holy Grail of Low-End PC Gaming

  • Potato Tier: Tier 2
  • The Secret 2026 Performance Fix: Set resolution to 720p; the art style hides the downscaling perfectly.

The 7-year itch is gone – Silksong is finally out. More importantly, Hollow Knight's long-awaited sequel looks gorgeous and runs beautifully, which should not come as a surprise considering its predecessor's quality. Despite nearly a decade passing since HK's debut, and Team Cherry nowadays being one of the most well-known developers ever, Silksong is still very much an indie Metroidvania that is intended to be as accessible as possible, at least when it comes to specs. The game is easy to run, as all you need is a 2012 i3 CPU and a 2011 GPU to meet the minimum requirements. If you have a moderately new system, you will probably be able to run Silksong at its recommended specs.

These eight best Silksong beginner tips will help both new players and veterans find their footing in Pharloom's haunted lands.

Hype can be both a good and bad thing, and few games have had as much hype as Silksong. While garnering its share of criticisms, which is to be expected of any project, the sequel has mostly garnered a standing ovation for its challenging but fun boss fights, good gameplay, amount of content, and world design. Silksong is also notoriously difficult, especially for people who might not have dropped a million hours in Hollow Knight. Even the latter's veterans will need to unlearn a few things if they want to beat Team Cherry's latest masterpiece.

Hades

The Best Triple-I Game Ever

  • Potato Tier: Tier 1
  • The Secret 2026 Performance Fix: Hades will run at a stable 60 FPS as long as you stay at 720p or 1080p. Since the art is hand-painted 2D/2.5D, it looks fine on low settings.

Supergiant's Hades is comfortably among the most popular roguelites on the market, and it serves as a good entry point for newcomers to the genre. The narrative follows Zagreus, the eponymous god's son, who wants to leave the Underworld and make his way to Olympus. However, his father rejects this plan, and he will not make this journey easy for the young prince. As a roguelite, Hades' loop revolves around replaying the same stages; however, unlike many similar games, defeat does not result in a complete reset. Instead, Zagreus' story develops naturally following a failure, so there is a constant sense of progression during the first 20 hours or so.

Boasting a gorgeous art style and fast-paced hack and slash combat, Hades knocks its presentation out of the park. Although an indie release, Supergiant's title is so polished and visually striking that it outshines most AAA projects; however, unlike the latest gaming blockbusters, Hades does not require a high-end PC. In fact, the game is really not demanding.

Ultrakill

The Best Shooter of the 2020s is Optimized To Perfection

  • Potato Tier: Tier 1
  • The Secret 2026 Performance Fix: Enable PSX Mode in settings; it’s stylized and improves FPS.

Steam is stuffed with modern boomer shooters, most of which use old-school visuals that make them easily workable on most decent systems. As fun as most of these games are, they do have a habit of blending, creating an undecipherable blob of shotguns, pixilated body parts, and gore. Despite adhering to this trend, Ultrakill succeeds in standing out from the crowd, providing an experience that is both unique and representative of the FPS genre at its best.

Ultrakill: Best Weapons, Ranked

Players looking to wield the best weapons in Ultrakill can't go wrong with these choices.

The goal of the game is not just to kill but to do it in style, to the point of containing a point system reminiscent of Devil May Cry. In fact, Ultrakill combines the thrill of fast-paced shooters with the player-based reward system of character action games, a completely harmonious marriage. As long as somebody doesn't mind high difficulty and early access releases, they should add Ultrakill to their library.
