With House of the Dragon season 3 set for June 21, there's no better time than the present to take a deep dive into Westeros' video game resume, all to get you pumped and ready for what HBO plans to deliver in a couple of months. Now, admittedly, great official Game of Thrones games do not exist, and the franchise has yet to produce that one truly fantastic, defining release. However, George R.R. Martin's universe seems tailor-made for video game adaptations, and a few developers have managed to piece together projects that are more than worthy of association with A Song of Ice & Fire.
In 2025, we got the full release of Game of Thrones: Kingsroad, the biggest game in the franchise yet. Due to its free-to-play status, I imagine most people looking to trudge through Westeros will gravitate to this RPG, especially since it looks fantastic from the outside looking in. There's definitely no harm in giving it a go, but I would suggest trying out a few niche titles if they happen to be in a genre you generally enjoy.

Crusader Kings 3: A Game of Thrones Mod
The Best Westeros Political Sim (And The Best GOT Game)
- Developer(s)
- Paradox Interactive
- Genre(s)
- RPG, Grand Strategy
- Platform(s)
- PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PC
Yeah, that's right, the first pick is a total conversion mod to a strategy game that can be overwhelming even without George R.R. Martin all over it. Without question, Crusader Kings 3's "A Game of Thrones Mod" sits unchallenged as the best GOT game available, and by quite an extensive margin. The vanilla content's fantastic blend of grand strategy role-play lends itself beautifully to A Song of Ice & Fire, to the point of becoming a match made in heaven. This mod does an incredible job of tweaking CK3's mechanics or creating new ones to make them fit Westeros' lore, mythology, and political infrastructure.
The mod uses the Dance of the Dragons as its start date, positioning Rhaenyra and Aegon 2 as central figureheads. However, you can pick from a pretty wide selection of characters, along with creating your own bastard and carving Westeros into your own image.
House of the Dragon Will Never Be Game of Thrones
3 seasons in, it's clear House of the Dragon will never live up to Game of Thrones' legacy.
Now, you should be slightly familiar with the base game to really get into this project, especially if you are new to the modding scene; however, complete beginners shouldn't be disheartened, as plenty of people got CK3 simply to play the AGOT mod. Considering the changes implemented, it can be a bit easier to approach the mod with a clean slate rather than having to unlearn a few habits. That said, I would recommend at least playing through CK3's tutorial, just to get the basic knowledge needed to really enjoy the mod. Also, you should probably start small and not as the King on the Iron Throne.

Special Mention: Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series
If You Can Get It, This Game Is An Enjoyable GOT Side Quest
Even though the AGOT mod is a 10/10 masterpiece, I assume most people might be put off by the sheer scope of not only the game but also the process to get it going. Consequently, let's go for something simple and accessible... in terms of gameplay.
Unfortunately, Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series cannot be purchased digitally anymore, so anybody interested would need to pick up a physical copy or double-check whether they already have the game on Steam (personally, I completely forgot that I picked this up through a bundle back in the day). Sadly, Telltale seems unlikely to return to Westeros.
If you manage to get a copy, you will find a game that successfully adopts the qualities that helped make this universe so beloved: tense dialogue, political anxiety, and characters you love getting brutally murdered. The gameplay relies heavily on timed dialogue choices. You might be sitting across from Cersei Lannister or Ramsay Bolton, trying to negotiate a treaty, while a timer ticks down. Do you insult them to keep your pride? Do you beg for mercy and look weak to your own people?
This is exactly the kind of stomach-churning political tightrope that Rhaenyra and Alicent have to walk through in House of the Dragon, knowing that one slip of the tongue could mean war. Rather than retelling the show or books, the game revolves around an original house loyal to the Starks, with the Forrester family's dynamic taking center stage.
A Game of Thrones: The Board Game – Digital Edition
A Masterpiece Tabletop Game Turned Into A Respectable Digital Game
A Game of Thrones: The Board Game – Digital Edition is for those groups of friends who yearn to engage in pure military strategy and psychological warfare. A digital adaptation of Fantasy Flight Games' legendary tabletop board game, Dire Wolf put together a respectable version that retains most of the complexity while also acting as an approachable introduction to the award-winning original.
10 Worst-Written House of the Dragon Characters, Ranked
Despite working off a fully written story, House of the Dragon is already failing several characters just two seasons into the show's run.
While we cannot go into everything here, the core round-based gameplay loop involves players placing their order tokens (March, Defend, Support, Raid, or Consolidate Power) on the map face down at the same time. No one knows what anyone else is up to until all tokens are flipped over simultaneously. Random dice rolls don't decide people's fate either, as battles are won through numbers, positioning, and card plays.
To be honest, I would only recommend this to a group of friends; however, there is some single-player content that can keep you busy for a while.
Reigns: Game of Thrones
Swipe Yes, Swipe No
All three previous games require substantial commitment either to play or locate, which isn't a bad thing when you want the months to fly by while waiting for HOTD season 3's arrival. Still, we should probably recommend something that requires fans to jump through almost no hoops, and Reigns: Game of Thrones is the perfect option. Rather than in-depth strategy or family dynamics, this is a fast-paced and, frankly, casual experience that can be played with just one hand. Yet, despite that, Reigns captures the cutthroat nature of Westeros surprisingly well.
Essentially, Reigns: Game of Thrones is Tinder in the Seven Kingdoms. Framed as separate timelines seen through Melisandre's visions, you play as a myriad of characters who seize the Iron Throne and, consequently, find themselves receiving requests from all sorts of folks. You simply swipe left or right to reject or accept the offer, and each decision impacts your four resources. Simple as the concept is, it works surprisingly well.
