Baldur's Gate 3 is iconic for so many reasons, but perhaps the most unforgettable is the companions that you and Tav will associate with throughout your journey. Each of the 10 companions is bustling with personality, which is why it's so fun to rank them in terms of how chaotic they can be for your party.

We've ranked each of the 10 companions in Baldur's Gate 3 in terms of how chaotic they can be, and by chaotic, we mean "who's the biggest troublemaker"? Below, you'll find our fun ranking for the cast of characters, not in terms of power, but in terms of seriousness to chaos.

We've ranked these Baldur's Gate 3 companions from the most responsible and serious to the most unhinged and chaotic.

BG3 Companion Chaotic Personality Tier List

S-Tier (Super Chaotic)

  • Astarion
  • Minsc
  • Karlach

A-Tier (Up for Chaotic Action)

  • Shadowheart
  • Gale
  • Lae'zel

B-Tier (Responsible)

  • Minthara
  • Wyll

C-Tier (No Nonsense)

  • Halsin
  • Jaheira

Halsin

An Archdruid's Focus Keeps Him Out of Trouble

  • Performance by: Dave Jones
  • Class: Druid

Halsin is a Druid, which already means that he's attuned to nature and its glory, and isn't very interested in the pleasures of drink and debauchery (even though you might be able to talk your way into bed with him). Regardless, it's clear that Halsin's priority is Emerald Grove, with the balance of nature and the ever-creeping civilization.

Halsin's focus is less on the fun that can be had in Baldur's Gate and more on freeing the Shadow Lands from rot and corruption. Halsin's intentions are pure and focused on protection and love for nature, so you won't find him starting a bar fight for the hell of it.

Jaheira

The High Harper Doesn't Have Time to Mess Around

  • Performance by: Tracy Wiles
  • Class: Druid

Jaheira's serious nature comes from a mixture of her responsibility, age, and experience, along with the loss of her husband. While Jaheira can enjoy a good time with her friends, the Cult of the Absolute ensures that now is not the time for such laughs, as the fate of Baldur's Gate could be her latest (and last) responsibility.

If there's anything chaotic in Jaheira's life, it's her children, who often banter and belittle her as an old woman. It's clear that Jaheira has a good relationship with her children, and it's nice to see her sharp wit cut sharper than her blades, but it's a rarity when so much is on the line.

Minthara

Is There Anyone More Serious Than a Drow?

  • Performance by: Emma Gregory
  • Class: Paladin

Drows are known for their cold persona and love of domination, which is why Minthara isn't likely to sit around a campfire and laugh the night away with companions that she cannot control. In fact, most players might have missed Minthara if they killed her at the Goblin Camp, since, after all, she is a villain.

Regardless, being freed from the Absolute's command will show a deeper and scarred side of Minthara, one of vulnerability, but that's still not enough to let her enjoy the thrills of life through chaos. Minthara is more focused on control, strategy, and cold calculation.

Wyll

Duke Ravengard's Son Respects Duty Over Silliness

  • Performance by: Theo Solomon
  • Class: Warlock

The Blade of Frontiers is a hero, through and through. There's no one as heroic and righteous as Wyll, and to prove it, he's dedicated his very soul to the cause. No one takes duty as sternly as Wyll, and it probably doesn't help that his father is the Duke of Baldur's Gate, showing that pressure was on Wyll from the start.

While Wyll can enjoy himself and let loose on occasion, the fact of the matter remains that he's dedicated to heroism and doing the right thing, so despite his legally bound relationship with the devil, Mizora, his moral code and sense of duty will keep him in line.

Shadowheart

The Child of Shar is More Concerned with Her Mission Than Her Entertainment

  • Performance by: Jennifer English
  • Class: Cleric

Shadowheart has a tragedy lurking within her memory-holden mind, and it takes an optimist to see that she's more than just her mission. If your version of Tav is patient and willing to bring the light of Selune to Shadowheart's heart, you might just find a girl who's up for a bit of fun through the seriousness of it all.

Even though Shadowheart can be somewhat influenced in the direction of a chaotic activity, she often prefers to focus on her mission at hand, which also happens to be extremely secretive. You'll spend more time breaking down Shadowheart's emotional barriers than you will getting into mischief with her.

Gale

The Wizard of Waterdeep Has Already Experienced a Fair Share of Chaotic Consequences

  • Performance by: Tim Downie
  • Class: Wizard

There are few wizards as obsessed with magic as Gale, who prides himself on his knowledge of the arcane arts and the secrets of the Weave. No cost is too high for Gale, which is exactly why he's up there with a high chaos energy. After all, it's Gale's own chaotic investigation that sees him imbued with a ticking time bomb of magic.

Gale's chaotic nature results in self-inflicted consequences. What hasn't this man done? He's been a Chosen (and lover) to the goddess Mystra, and his own ambitions see him desperate to enjoy godhood for himself. When left to his own devices, Gale uses his intelligence for reckless chaos in search of something more.

Lae'zel

The Githyanki With Ambition Doesn't Always Have a Plan to Back It Up

  • Performance by: Devora Wilde
  • Class: Fighter

The Githyanki are a serious species from the Astral Plane, and their eternal war against the Mind Flayers means that they have no time (or respect) for Faerun and the people there. Lae'zel is as Githyanki as they come, and she's entirely serious and devoted to the Lich Queen Vlaakith. That is, until she sees what Faerun can offer her.

When Lae'zel isn't left ignored, she can actually be rather chaotic. She calls for violence and combat when diplomacy is an option, and her warrior code means that the fight is more important than the consequences. Convincing Lae'zel of Vlaakith's betrayal starts a spiral of identity crisis for Lae'zel that definitely shows she's someone you want in your corner when it comes to chaos.

Minsc

A Miniature Space Hamster and a Love of Heroism Don't Always Stop Minsc From Being Misguided

  • Performance by: Matthew Mercer
  • Class: Ranger

Minsc is a very simple man, and that's not meant as an insult. In fact, Minsc would be rather happy to be called such a thing. Minsc is cheery, heroic, and loves to get into mischief with his miniature giant space hamster, Boo. All of these factors are why Minsc is one of the more chaotic companions of the party.

Minsc's gullibility and pure-hearted devotion to crushing evil make him extremely chaotic, and there's no trouble that he won't try to punch and stab his way out of. Minsc isn't the sharpest tool in the shed, which leads him into many predicaments, but just because he's not the sharpest, doesn't mean he can't crush you as the bluntest.

Karlach

A Heart as Hot as Avernus Won't Stop Karlach From Enjoying Herself

  • Performance by: Samantha Beart
  • Class: Barbarian

Barbarians have a reputation for being hot-headed and violent, and Karlach fulfills that reputation with a smile. Freed from the clutches of Avernus and its hells, Karlach has one goal in mind: to enjoy life while she still has it. Karlach's heart is burning up, and remaining away from Avernus will kill her, which is why she wants to live life to the fullest.

Karlach prefers heroism to random acts of violence, but she does enjoy the chaos of a good battle. Karlach wants to enjoy the simplest pleasures in life, which to her, involves drinking, laughing, fighting, and sleeping with a companion. Karlach's quick to burn, and hard to cool down for those very low-impulse-controlled reasons.

Astarion

Is There Anyone More Chaotic Than a Vampire Spawn?

  • Performance by: Neil Newbon
  • Class: Rogue

Astarion doesn't exactly have anything to lose, since he's been a vampire spawn under the abusive and heinous control of Cazador Szarr for centuries. With the tadpole, Astarion is allowed to enjoy things he never could as a vampire spawn: he's free, can walk in the sun, and can really let loose with his chaotic personality.

Astarion is impulsive, petty, sarcastic, and irresistibly (and dangerously) charming. Astarion's got a history of getting into trouble, and he can seduce or kill you with a flip of a coin. If there's any companion that oozes charisma and chaos, it's Astarion through and through.
