The setting is one of the best parts of the Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra universe. The geopolitical makeup of Aang's and Korra's world helped drive some of the most historic conflicts of all time, like the bloodthirsty Fire Lords seeking to expand their island nation's sphere of influence, or Kuvira going on the march to form the Earth Empire. While Aang fought to preserve the world as it was meant to be, he and his friends altered the course of history when they shaped a brand-new realm, the United Republic of Nations.

The groundwork for the United Republic of Nations was laid down in the Avatar: The Last Airbender Dark Horse comics. Fans got to see the United Republic of Nations up close in The Legend of Korra from Episode 1 onward. Bit by bit, viewers learned how exactly this nation functioned as a vision for the future, while also seeing how certain cycles of war and greed nearly tore it apart. For all its idealism and success, not even the United Republic of Nations is free from the darker side of leaders and benders.

The Genesis and Near-Destruction of the United Republic of Nations

Aang and Zuko Gave Land to People Who Needed it the Most

Bad leadership from the Fire Nation saw the world nearly destroyed for no good reason. Fire Lord Sozin arrogantly thought he should expand his country's borders and colonize the world whether everyone else liked it or not. This terrible trend ended with the rise of Fire Lord Zuko thanks to the aid of Avatar Aang, but some scars were too deep to heal. The recent Fire Nation colonies were dissolved without issue as their citizens were relocated, but Yu Dao was another matter entirely. It was too well established to be dismantled, so Aang and Zuko resolved to create a new nation where Yu Dao stood.

Thus, Yu Dao threw open the doors to the first truly multinational entity in all of Avatar: The Last Airbender. It was a neutral meeting ground of people from around the world, where unity, cooperation, and hope mattered more than any homeland's interests. Naturally, the newly born United Republic of Nations took up a chunk of the Earth Kingdom's land on the western shore, with that kingdom alone having enough space for this new sovereign nation. Earth King Kuei allowed this, but his daughter Hou-Ting felt differently, and so did the villainous metalbender Kuvira, for that matter.

7 Ways The Legend of Korra Disappointed Avatar Fans

Fans were over the moon when a sequel to Avatar: The Last Airbender was confirmed, but the series didn't quite live up to expectations.

In the eyes of Hou-Ting and Kuvira, the United Republic of Nations was an illegitimate country on stolen ground, making it no better than an oversized Fire Nation colony. This is the tragic irony of it all, with the practical idealism of the United Republic of Nations' birth giving rise to yet more geopolitical tensions. Aang wanted a world in balance, and within the United Republic of Nations' borders, he did just that. However, this loss of Earth Kingdom territory helped inspire the ruthless militarism of Kuvira's new Earth Empire, alongside the chaos Zaheer ushered in. Aang's successor learned the hard way that compromises like this may anger as many people as those same compromises help, meaning the idea of true balance remains ever elusive and subjective.

A seven-decade time skip separated the Yu Dao conundrum with Avatar Korra's arrival in Republic City, meaning the United Republic of Nations had ample time to grow and develop with its own identity and place in the world. This nation has vast territory with plenty of resources, though The Legend of Korra mostly focused on the urban landscape of Republic City itself, showing the end result of all this industrialization and hard work. That was still more than enough for the personality and functions of the United Republic of Nations to make itself clear.

Another irony of this new nation is how it simply shifted the woes of imbalance from international wars to the question of benders vs non-benders. For decades, a council usually made up of benders oversaw the country from Republic City, to the point Amon the bloodbender revolutionary saw fit to rise up with his advanced tech to correct this imbalance. Funnily enough, the radical Amon had a point, and it took his uprising for the heroes to realize this problem at the United Republic of Nations' heart. Thus, the nation is now run by a president, with everyone being enfranchised to choose their own leaders. As of The Legend of Korra's second season, this made the United Republic of Nations the world's sole democracy.

The rest of the United Republic of Nations' identity is far more inspiring and harmonious than its built-in geopolitical issues or the problem of non-bender resentment. Aside from those long-standing social ills, the United Republic of Nations is just what Aang and Zuko hoped it would be: a shining example of prosperity and unity going hand in hand. The four nations are healthy and strong when separate, yet the people are enriched further when this fifth nation blends it all together. Good international relations are one thing, but it's another for four cultures and technological bases to join forces to create the world's most advanced nation.

7 Avatar & Korra Characters Who Only Survived Because of Plot Armor

For better or worse, Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra both have a funny relationship with plot armor.

The United Republic of Nations is a world leader in technology and medicine, combining the know-how and tech from all corners of the world to make humanity more than the sum of its parts. Even bending was transformed, with earthbending becoming more precise in urban battles and waterbending taking on a more aggressive edge to expand the possibilities of elemental bending, which also helped shape how pro bending works. Sub-bending styles such as metalbending and lightning generation have a home in this industrialized realm, from electric power to bending vehicles or buildings via metalbending, as Toph's and Lin's police force showed.

In short, the United Republic of Nations may be built on shakier ground than Aang or Zuko hoped, but they still got what they wanted: a realm where everyone can be their best and envision the future without age-old national tensions or isolation holding anyone back. This progress was sometimes hijacked by the likes of the Equalists or wasted on the iffy President Raiko, but otherwise, this nation's creation is one for the history books, creating a rich new setting for Avatar Korra to explore.
