The sun is often a popular choice for characters to garner their powers from in anime series. However, the moon can be just as versatile and arguably even more interesting. Through it, some anime characters have showcased incredible abilities. Over the years, numerous characters have shown to use abilities ranging from creating and controlling moonlight, such as Sailor Moon, while others simply grow stronger through the moon, such as Carrot from One Piece.
8 Best Lightning Users in Anime, Ranked
Lightning users are swift and destructive. These characters represent some of the best lightning users in anime.
Freese the Seer
- Anime: Black Clover
The Black Clover series is a popular shonen set in a magical medieval world. With so much magic to go around, Tabata has introduced different types, one of which is known as Moonlight Magic. Moonlight magic, as the name implies, makes use of a grimoire to create and control the power of moonlight. In the Black Clover series, there is only one confirmed user of this magic, an individual known as Freese the Seer.
Freese is not the most relevant character around, but his abilities have caught the attention of many readers. While Freese is quite a disliked character, he has showcased the power of moonlight in the Black Clover series with Crescent Cut Full Moon or Bewitching Moonlight. Fans would have definitely hoped for more moonlight users in the manga to make an appearance.
Carrot
- Anime: One Piece
Carrot is a part of the Mink race of the One Piece world. Among the Minks, she is easily one of the most relevant characters around. Carrot has traveled with the Straw Hat Pirates for some time and became an extremely popular character among the fans.
With that being said, like all Minks, Carrot can grow stronger through the light of the Moon. In fact, Carrot was the very first character of One Piece to showcase the Sulong form, a transformation that the Mink race takes on when exposed to the light of the full moon. With this power-up, she becomes white and can fight powerful enemies.

Yue
- Anime: Cardcaptor Sakura
In the early 2000s, not many shoujo anime could compete with CLAMP’s hit series, Cardcaptor Sakura. This series features many interesting side characters, and in that sense, it's not surprising to see one character, known as Yue, possess some incredible moon-related powers. For some time, Yue was known as Yukito Tsukishiro in the series, until his true identity was revealed as one of the guardians of the Clow Cards alongside Cerberus.
His name, Yue, means moon in Chinese, and he is one of the most memorable moon users in anime. His powers have proven to be extremely versatile, even in the defensive field, as he is able to generate moon shields. Like many characters related to the moon, he can also use moonlight offensively. He can control the moonlight to create weapons, as was seen when he made a bow.
Nekomamushi/Inuarashi
- Anime: One Piece
Just like Carrot, Nekomamushi, and Inuarashi are two extremely important members of the Mink tribe in One Piece. In fact, they are the two strongest known Minks in the story. Nekomamushi and Inuarashi led the Mink Tribe and took shifts when it came down to protecting the island of Zou stuck on the back of Zunesha.
In all of One Piece, they have the strongest Sulong forms of all. In the Wano arc of the series, they showcased their full power when the full moon appeared. They transformed into Sulong and defeated their adversaries with tremendous strength. Given that they got the better of Jack and Perospero, it was an immense feat of strength, all thanks to a major power-up they got straight from the moon.

Water is a very versatile element to manipulate, and numerous anime characters incorporate this ability brilliantly in their arsenal.
Hagoromo Otsutsuki
- Anime: Naruto
Hagoromo is quite an interesting character hailing from the Naruto series. Hagoromo is a part of the Otsutsuki Clan, making him one of the very strongest characters of the whole franchise. As a God, he goes beyond the average moon user’s level. He doesn't make use of the moon, but he literally creates it in the Naruto series, with the help of his brother.
With the moon, he is able to create one of the strongest seals of the entire Naruto series, which sealed away Kaguya Otsutsuki, his mother. Hagoromo also possesses a wide array of abilities that make him as strong as he is. He isn't the most specialized user related to the moon, but he has certainly showcased immense power by creating his universe's moon through a massive Chibaku Tensei.
Kokushibo
- Anime: Demon Slayer
Kokushibo is one of the most iconic new-gen antagonists and he comes straight from the Demon Slayer series. Among the antagonists of Demon Slayer, Kokushibo's strength is only second to Muzan, the King of Demons. He holds the title of the Upper Rank One Demon and has reached this level through the powers granted to him by Muzan as well as his Moon Breathing.
Kokushibo is the only character in Demon Slayer to possess the interesting Moon Breathing Style. It's a direct parallel to his brother's Sun Breathing. While other forms of Breathing Techniques are simple illusions in Demon Slayer, Kokushibo's Moon Breathing is actually real. By swinging his sword, Kokushibo can actually create crescent moon slashes that deal fatal damage to his enemies. His battle has yet to be animated but fans should see it brought to life in the second Infinity Castle movie, where he will take on Gyomei, Sanemi, Muichiro, and Genya. He is definitely one of the most impressive moon users around in anime and he will surely become a fan favorite soon.
Son Goku
- Anime: Dragon Ball
Dragon Ball features many exciting power-ups, but an often forgotten yet incredible power-up comes directly in the early parts of the series directly through the moon. The Saiyans of Universe 7 in the world of Dragon Ball all possess the ability to transform into a Great Ape, and Goku, after being sent to Earth long ago, tapped into this power on many occasions. While Goku had a tail, if he ever looked directly at the moon, his powers increased drastically and he transformed into a massive ape with tremendous strength. The only way to get rid of this transformation is to chop off his tail, as was seen happening on multiple occasions in the story. To this day, it is one of the most unique powers derived from the moon.
Sailor Moon
- Anime: Sailor Moon
When it comes to the most iconic user of moon abilities around, no one is as iconic as Sailor Moon, also known as Usagi Tsukino. Sailor Moon is the protagonist of her series and she is the reincarnation of Princess Serenity, the Princess of the Silver Millennium, which is the Moon Kingdom.
Each of the Sailor Scouts gets their powers from their respective planet, but in Usagi's case, her powers come straight from Earth’s satellite. A lot of Usagi's attacks are themed based on the moon, such as her Moon Frisbee or Silver Moon Crystal Power Therapy Kiss ability. With that, Sailor Moon has proven to be one of the strongest characters in her own series and also one of the strongest characters in anime in general.
