Power-up transformations have shaped anime, especially in the shonen demographic. From Dragon Ball to One Piece and Naruto, there are countless transformations that fans have grown to love and look forward to seeing in their favorite series. While transformations mean power boosts, they can also be double-edged swords with lots of downsides. Some transformations, for instance, come with a time limit that acts as a major debuff to their user to balance things out.

8 Godspeed

Killua Godspeed Best Anime Transformations Time Limit
  • Anime: Hunter x Hunter

Killua's Godspeed transformation has become one of the most iconic in not only Hunter x Hunter, but also anime, in general. Godspeed is an ability he acquired through the mastery of his nen, and it allows him to charge up his own body with electricity, which can be used in a multitude of ways. Godspeed can help Killua react almost instantly to attacks, while also allowing him to increase his speed and power. Despite its power, at the moment, Godspeed is still limited.

While there isn't a fixed time on how long Godspeed lasts, it usually depends on how much energy Killua uses. When using it just for a speed boost, it can last a bit longer. However, against Youpi, where he discharged powerful electric attacks, it ran out quite fast and left him more vulnerable.

7 Titan Shifters

  • Anime: Attack on Titan

Attack on Titan is a darker shonen that features brutal conflict between humans and Titans. A few humans in the series have inherited the abilities of Titans. With it, they can take the form of a gigantic Titans, with varying abilities depending on which Titan they have consumed. The Titan Shifters are some of the strongest characters around, but their transformations come with a time limit.

While an exact figure isn't exactly clear, the Titan form can't last too long, and it can't be overused either, as it drains too much energy to transform even just a few times a week. Eren had to train greatly in the series to be able to transform more often. In that sense, the more one trains, the longer they can use their Titan form. Of course, there is a major exception with Pieck's Cart Titan, which can, unlike others, last for over a week, making it the only one with no real time limit.

6 King Of Hell

Zoro King Of Hell Best Anime Transformations Time Limit
  • Anime: One Piece

King of Hell is a unique form of Roronoa Zoro that he first used during the Wano arc against Kaido's strongest underling, King. With this form, Zoro allows Enma to drain the maximum amount of Haki from him that's possible, and exudes an enormous Ryuo, becoming capable of striking down almost any enemy he faces. When King of Hell is active, his swords get lit with green flames and he coats them in Conqueror’s Haki to an incredible degree.

Despite this form's overwhelming strength against most enemies, it has a time limit which acts as a major debuff for Zoro. Zoro can only use this form for a few minutes, and after that, he needs some time to recover. If overused, King of Hell can even kill Zoro. As he fights more battles and grows in strength, Zoro will learn to control this form with a higher time limit.

5 Adult Gon

  • Anime: Hunter x Hunter

Adult Gon is the ultimate power-up in Hunter x Hunter. When faced with despair at the news that Kite couldn't be brought back, Gon lost his mind and decided to sacrifice all his nen in hopes of beating the strongest Royal Guard, Neferpitou. By sacrificing his nen, Gon was able to tap into his adult form that made him reach the pinnacle of nen mastery.

In this form, Gon ages up and gains tremendous strength. He was able to destroy Neferpitou, even with her post-mortem nen power up. However, Adult Gon is an extremely limited transformation that only lasted for the Neferpitou fight. Once the fight was over, Gon turned back into normal and sustained deadly damage that could only be healed by Alluka. Not only is Adult Gon a transformation with a time limit, but it's one that Gon will never be able to tap into again due to him having lost all his nen the first time.

4 Metamoran Fusion

  • Anime: Dragon Ball

Dragon Ball is a series that is certainly not lacking when it comes to power-ups. Out of the bunch, an extremely iconic one is the Metamoran Fusion form. With this ability, two characters can fuse and gain a major power boost. Quite a few characters have had the chance to tap into it, but the most iconic duo remains Vegeta and Goku fusing together, leading to Gogeta.

This fusion form significantly boosts the strength, speed, and overall power of two characters. However, while it’s a major boost, it also comes with the downside of a time limit. The time limit depends on a few factors, such as the power of the characters or if they’re using any other transformation on top. On average, it could generally be said that this fusion can last around minutes. The Potara fusion is significantly better in that regard.

3 Baryon Mode

baryon mode Naruto Uzumaki Best Anime Transformations Time Limit
  • Anime: Boruto

Naruto Uzumaki from the Naruto series has a multitude of overpowered transformations. His strongest out of the bunch is one he unlocked in the Boruto series, known as Baryon Mode. Baryon Mode is incredibly overpowered, and it combines both Naruto and Kurama's chakra to give rise to a new form of energy. This energy is immense, but it runs out quite fast.

With Baryon Mode, Naruto was not only able to keep up but to overwhelm Isshiki Otsutsuki. It's one of the strongest transformations in the whole verse, but the cost that comes with burning chakra makes it extremely time-limited. The more Naruto uses it, the more he puts his own life at risk. Because of him overusing it in the Boruto series, he actually lost Kurama and suffered a major debuff. The power of Baryon Mode comes with an extreme cost that makes it almost not worth using.

  • Anime: Naruto

In the Fourth Ninja War, Might Guy surprised many when he put out one of the strongest Naruto transformations ever seen. To fight against the threat of Madara Uchiha, Guy opened the Eighth Gate and allowed the chakra to flow completely freely in his body. He immediately became a force to be reckoned with.

With this transformation, he became so strong that he could easily keep up with the likes of Ten Tails Jinchuriki The Eighth Gate transformation while extremely overpowered, but it comes with a major time limit and ultimately results in the death of the user. The Eighth Gate transformation can only be used once and it runs for as long as the chakra lasts. Following that, the user dies, but Guy survived thanks to Naruto's Six Paths Powers.

1 Gear 5

One Piece Chapters 1180 1182 Upgraded God Devil Fruit Awakening Luffy ring
  • Anime: One Piece

In One Piece, Gear 5 is the most iconic and widely known transformation. It is Luffy's latest and strongest transformation that he unlocked after dying in battle against the King of Beasts, Kaido. This transformation turns Luffy into the all-white warrior and grants him the powers to do anything that he can imagine. While this transformation is extremely strong and holds the power to even defeat a Yonko like Kaido, it has a time limit, like many other of Luffy's forms before it, like Gear 4.

Luffy can only keep up his Gear 5 for a short amount of time, and after that time is up, he is exhausted and turns into an old man. As the One Piece story progresses, Luffy will learn to control it and use it for longer periods of time.
