A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms concluded its six-episode first season run on February 22, 2026 with the finale "The Morrow." The debut season was well-received as a character-driven and lightly humorous alternative to the grim tones of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. The story of Dunk and Egg is spread across three of George R. R. Martin’s published Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, with the first season adapting the opening tale, The Hedge Knight.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is neither a sequel nor a prequel in thematic terms; it sits in between the House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones timeline, unfolding in 209 AC, which is roughly 78 years after the conclusion of Dance of the Dragons in 131 AC. The second season is confirmed to cover The Sworn Sword, and as the source material expands, the world of Dunk and Egg enlarges. New characters enrich the lore, and chief among them is Lady Rohanne Webber, the Red Widow from the Reach, who becomes both a cause of Ser Duncan the Tall’s suffering and an object of his attraction. For show-only fans, it's a good time to discover who she is and what she brings to the story.

AKOTSK Season 2 Confirms The Red Widow's Casting

British actor Lucy Boynton (Bohemian Rhapsody, Murder on the Orient Express) is set to play Lady Rohanne Webber, the Red Widow, in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2, while Scottish actor-filmmaker Peter Mullan (The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Outlander: Blood of My Blood) will portray the Knight of Standfast, Ser Eustace Osgrey. Babou Ceesay will play Ser Bennis of the Brown Shield (Alien: Earth, Into the Badlands). Although not yet in the main timeline, Lady Rohanne Webber would later become the wife of Gerold Lannister and grandmother to Tywin Lannister.

In The Sworn Sword, Ser Duncan the Tall is entangled in a feud between Lady Rohanne and Ser Eustace, alongside his fellow sworn sword, Ser Bennis. Lady Rohanne, the only surviving child of the Lord of Coldmoat, Wyman Webber, earned and accepted the nickname "the Red Widow" after the deaths of her four husbands: her father's squire, a 55-year-old man, Ser Simon Staunton, and Ser Rolland Uffering.

It was also rumored that she had been responsible for the deaths of several of her infant brothers in order to strengthen her succession. Due to the deaths of her brothers, husbands, and children, George R. R. Martin describes the Red Widow as having "a spider’s heart." Following her fourth husband's death, Lady Rohanne came to be widely recognized as the Red Widow and was believed to be a witch and a poisoner who had eliminated members of her own family. She would eventually marry her foe, Ser Eustace, and after his death, she became Lady Lannister, mother to Gerold's four sons, one of whom was Tytos, who fathered Tywin Lannister.

How Does Ser Duncan Meet Lady Rohanne Webber?

Ser Duncan and Lady Rohanne's relationship has several layers to unpack. Before any of her marriages, Lady Rohanne had feelings for her father’s page and squire, Addam Osgrey. Because of this, Addam's father, Ser Eustace, approached Lord Wyman and proposed that the two be married. However, relations soured after Lord Webber refused and mocked his good friend Eustace. With time, tensions arose between the Webbers and the Osgreys, contributing to the broader conflict that Ser Duncan becomes entangled in.

Ser Eustace also sided with Daemon Blackfyre during the First Blackfyre Rebellion, hoping to regain his lost lands and castles. However, when Daemon was defeated at the Battle of the Redgrass Field, and Ser Eustace’s three sons, including Addam, were killed, Lady Rohanne came to deeply resent him. Eustace, though pardoned by King Daeron II Targaryen, lost more of his lands to House Webber, including the Chequy Water stream in the Reach, which reignited the conflict between Houses Osgrey and Webber.

Martin’s The Sworn Sword reveals that the Seven Kingdoms were suffering from a severe drought a year and a half after the events of The Hedge Knight, during which time the Hedge Knight Ser Duncan was sworn to Ser Eustace Osgrey, alongside his squire, Egg, and Ser Bennis, helping defend Eustace’s lands from Lady Rohanne. After Duncan learned of the Chequy Water being dammed, it led to a confrontation between the two Houses, and Ser Bennis assaulted one of Lady Rohanne’s servants with his longsword. At one point in the tale, Dunk also reflects on Ser Eustace, saying:

All they left the old man was a tower to die in.

Old, alone, and without any heirs, since his daughter Alysanne was taken hostage at King’s Landing, Ser Eustace now relied on the services of Ser Duncan the Tall and Ser Bennis. Knowing full well that Lady Rohanne would not overlook the assault on one of her workers, Ser Eustace orders Ser Duncan and Ser Bennis to gather men from nearby villages. They manage to recruit eight peasants, but soon discard the idea of them fighting Lady Rohanne's knights.

When Ser Eustace suggests offering a blood price as compensation for assaulting Lady Rohanne's servant, Duncan rides Coldmoat as Ser Eustace’s emissary. There, he realizes he is attracted to her. He learns that the Chequy Water was given to House Webber in the aftermath of the First Blackfyre Rebellion. Ser Duncan also finds out that Lady Rohanne is dealing with problems of her own, that she needs a husband soon, or risks losing her lands to a cousin, Ser Wendell Webber. To top it all off, Ser Duncan eventually discovers that her late father, Lord Wyman, has tasked the castellan of Coldmoat, Ser Lucas Longinch, with warding off any unworthy suitors. However, Longinch takes this to believe that Lady Rohanne is meant for him and presses her to marry him.

Will AKOTSK Season 2 Feature A Trial By Combat?

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1 stayed largely true to The Hedge Knight. The second season is also expected to remain loyal to The Sworn Sword novella, with showrunner Ira Parker commenting (Per IGN):

We're pretty faithful to the book, again. I would say little flourishes here and there, but we did a lot of that in Season 1 as well. It should all feel inherent to the world and to Dunk's POV.

Given that Ser Duncan the Tall’s Trial by Combat becomes the only way to resolve the standoff at Coldmoat, the confrontation is set to be a pivotal action sequence in the upcoming season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. What unfolds is Lady Rohanne rejecting Ser Duncan’s offer of a blood price and instead demanding that Ser Bennis be handed over. On the other hand, the string of revelations and lies prompts Ser Duncan to consider leaving Osgrey's services, but he ultimately decides to stay for the sake of the innocent and defenseless villagers.

In 211 AC, when Lady Rohanne and Ser Duncan’s party face off at the Chequy Water, Duncan asks for a private word with her. They attempt to settle the dispute in the middle of the stream, where Ser Duncan reveals the true identity of his squire, Egg, as Prince Aegon of House Targaryen by showing his ring and slashing his own cheek as payment. While impressed, Lady Rohanne still demands an apology from her long-standing rival, Ser Eustace. When Eustace refuses, the opposing sides ultimately decide to resolve the standoff through a duel. Though Ser Duncan wins the Trial by Combat by killing Ser Lucas Longinch, he drowns in the stream, only to be revived by Coldmoat’s maester, Cerrick, using the Ironborn’s method of restitution known as the "Kiss of Life."

The combat ends with Lady Rohanne and Ser Eustace resolving their differences, with the latter allowing her to enter Standfast, where she weeps at Addam Osgrey's grave. Ser Eustace comforts her, and the two bond over their families and marry the next day. Lady Rohanne retains Coldmoat and offers Duncan a position as her captain of the guards. Duncan, who had felt drawn to her throughout, is disheartened to learn that she did not visit him during his recovery.

As Ser Duncan prepares to depart from Coldmoat, the two meet one last time. He refuses her offer of service and a horse, but they share a passionate kiss. Before parting, Ser Duncan also cuts off a length of her famous braid, keeping it as a token of their rendezvous. Egg, however, accepts Lady Rohanne’s young palfrey and names it Rain.

AKOTSK Season 2 is Coming Soon

Ser Duncan in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

Aside from Boynton as Lady Rohanne Webber, Mullan as Ser Eustace Osgrey, and Ceesay as Ser Bennis, Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell will return in their roles as Dunk and Egg in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2. Furthermore, Paul Chahidi is slated to play Septon Sefton. There are plenty of compelling characters in George R. R. Martin's Dunk and Egg books, but Lady Rohanne Webber is a particularly interesting, complicated, and fierce female character that will no doubt win fans over.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2 is currently filming. The upcoming season will consist of six episodes and is expected to premiere in early 2027. And, considering just how much will be new in the fantasy show's sophomore season, it's as good a time as any for fans to familiarize themselves with George R. R. Martin's lore.
