James Bond is an IP that has been around for about as long as video games have even existed. The early days were dominated by pure spy goodness, from the villains to the gadgets, and as the franchise evolved, so did the world of gaming. There have been dozens of different Bond games over the years, perhaps most notably Goldeneye, but it has always felt that there was a gap in the market that many so desperately wanted to be filled by a decent thriller. Now in 2026, that wait may finally be over, with the release of First Light marking the return of the icon to gaming after a long break, and this time around, things may truly be shaken and not just stirred.

007 First Light: Hitman Devs Tackle James Bond - Hands-On Preview

We got to play over 3 hours of the new Bond game, 007 First Light. Let's see if IO Interactive can make an impact with such an iconic franchise.

There's a whole new story and a lead to follow, modern graphics to bring the action to life, and a gameplay style that has been refined over decades of progress, to hopefully deliver one of the best stealth-adventure games ever made. With such a big name on its shoulders and some pretty high expectations to follow, many people are hoping that the return will finally bring with it the spy experience they have been searching for, and perhaps more importantly, a host of sequels that extend into a full franchise full of hits for years to come.

Old Hero, Modern Setting

A Reinvention Of The Classic Spy

Details:

  • An original version of the character rather than a film copy
  • Movies move away from licensed stories to a standalone identity

007 First Light isn't just going to be another case of a piece of media being adapted one-for-one, just for the sake of it. In reality, the game is looking to tell a fresh origin story that is inspired by the novels by Ian Fleming, taking players on an adventure that will follow Bond and his mission to earn his license to kill.

Complementing the titular character are a whole host of reimagined figures like M and Miss Moneypenny, who will also be shown in a different light from the one previously seen in the movies. And, with a brand-new villain at the helm, the game is already showing that, despite the name, it is more than happy to move far away from the existing franchise in a completely distinct direction.

Stealth Is Core To The Experience

Espionage Over Pure Action

Details:

  • Emphasis on infiltration, gadgets, and controlled encounters
  • Encourages player choice between stealth and direct action

Stealth games have been in a bit of a drought recently, but First Light may be about to change that. The gameplay revolves around classic infiltration and espionage objectives, putting players in the middle of a gala with the goal of uncovering information or tasking them with sneaking into an enemy base, all without being detected.

With multiple games in the franchise, the Hitman games cover a spectrum of greatness.

Mechanically, players have access to several kinds of tools that will let them distract guards or cause chaos, to move around the maps and progress further in the mission. But, when things inevitably go wrong, good old-fashioned bullets will always be there to help out, as the gameplay shifts quickly between drawn-out stealth sequences and fast-paced shootouts in the blink of an eye.

Cinematic Design Without Losing Focus

Movie Level Shots, But Still A Game At Heart

Details:

  • Narrative presentation fused with a stellar gameplay loop
  • Maintains pacing without relying on rigid scripting

Graphical presentation has become increasingly important over the years, and in this case, the cinematic nature of the experience is certainly front and centre. The game aims to capture the movie magic of the Bond films while preserving player agency by structuring missions with multiple approaches and creating a balance between spectacle and interactivity.

Historically, Bond games struggled with this balance, often leaning too heavily on scripted moments that suffered in the long run from a lack of actual engagement. First Light’s approach suggests a more modern design philosophy, where cinematic elements enhance rather than replace the gameplay, and where the player's interests are placed first, above simply making a good-looking product.

A Cohesive World With More Than One Answer

Locations Designed For Exploring

Details:

  • Environments support multiple playstyles and routes
  • Meaningful structure placement

First Light’s environments are built with purpose, having several different routes and approaches for attack that players can learn and exploit as they move around each space. There are opportunities to pickpocket or eavesdrop, or simply skip the puzzles entirely in some cases, turning the rooms and buildings into a sandbox full of creative solutions.

In the broader context, this reflects how far level design has come over the years, and how it feels more and more that games choose to present linear routes to success, as opposed to opening the doors for players to really run away with. The constant forking nature of the locations and the sheer number of options available also mean that the triumphs will feel far more rewarding, as after figuring out a series of steps and making it through to the end, players will be able to pat themselves on the back and appreciate their newfound spy skills.

Setting Up The Future

Far From A One-Off

Details:

  • Success could establish a long-term franchise
  • Moves the series toward modern AAA standards

Perhaps the biggest reason why First Light is such an important product for the Bond franchise is how it could potentially lead to a long-term franchise of sequels and even spin-offs. The stealth-adventure space is hardly crowded, dominated primarily by Hitman, so there is plenty of room for a newcomer to burst onto the scene and show the world what it has to offer.

From what has been shown so far, and the early previews that have already started coming out, things are looking bright and positive across the board. Assuming the game does well, the chances of follow-ups increase tremendously, and with what can only be assumed as a big budget riding on it, the future of Bond gaming really does depend on it.
